I have been on the freelancer side of 100+ projects, so this is the process I wish every client used. It works whether you end up hiring me or someone else.
Six steps from brief to handover
- Write a one-page brief
What the WordPress developer must deliver, by when, and what done looks like. Include links to sites or tools you like.
- Shortlist three to five people
From referrals, marketplaces or portfolios. Ask which plugins they avoid and why; a senior WordPress developer has firm opinions here.
- Run a small paid test
A custom Gutenberg block with editable fields and no new plugins. A half-day task like this shows quality and communication.
- Agree scope and milestones
Fixed price per milestone, with acceptance criteria you can check.
- Handover and ownership
Get the code, accounts, docs and a walkthrough before the final payment.
