Hiring a freelance full stack developer, step by step
Most bad freelance hires fail at the start, not the end. The brief was vague, the scope was never written down, or payment was not tied to anything you could check. Fix those three things and hiring a full stack developer becomes much less risky.
I have been on the freelancer side of 100+ projects, so this is the process I wish every client used. It works whether you end up hiring me or someone else.
Six steps from brief to handover
- Write a one-page brief
What the full stack developer must deliver, by when, and what done looks like. Include links to sites or tools you like.
- Shortlist three to five people
From referrals, marketplaces or portfolios. Give them a small paid task that touches both the UI and the database, and read the code.
- Run a small paid test
A small feature that touches UI, API and database, shipped behind a flag. A half-day task like this shows quality and communication.
- Agree scope and milestones
Fixed price per milestone, with acceptance criteria you can check.
- Handover and ownership
Get the code, accounts, docs and a walkthrough before the final payment.
What I take on as your full stack developer
- Front end — React and Next.js interfaces that feel fast.
- Back end — Node.js and Python APIs with clean data models.
- Databases — Postgres, Supabase or Firebase set up for growth.
- Auth and payments — sign-in, roles and Stripe billing done safely.
- Deployment — CI, hosting and monitoring so releases are boring.
- Code reviews — a senior pair of eyes on existing code.
