Hire Head of Lifecycle Marketing — journeys built and run daily

A Head of Lifecycle Marketing builds and runs the customer journeys every day: onboarding flows, engagement triggers, winback campaigns — constructed in the ESP and marketing automation platforms, tested continuously, and optimized on performance data. They live in the journey builder and the analytics, turning lifecycle strategy into working programs. The hire for when the journeys are designed (or need designing alongside) and someone has to make them real.

I'm Omer Muneer Qazi, a Dubai-based Fractional CTO & Solutions Architect with 15+ years of experience and 100+ projects delivered across 6 countries. I vet lifecycle operators on platform mastery and testing discipline — reviewing journeys they have actually built, not decks about journeys. A structured engagement with no surprises — you’ll always know what’s happening and what’s next.

Why Omer

Why hire a head of lifecycle marketing through a Fractional CTO

Lifecycle execution is platform craft plus analytical thinking, and I check both: journey builds I can inspect, test results I can verify. A head who cannot QA their own logic will ship broken journeys that silently lose revenue.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does a Head of Lifecycle Marketing cost?

Full-time $110k–$160k. Fractional or contract heads work when journey volume needs senior operation without a permanent hire.

Which platforms do they work in?

Whatever you run — Klaviyo, Braze, Iterable, HubSpot, or custom stacks. Platform mastery transfers; the vetting focuses on journey logic and testing rigor.

First 90 days?

Audit, priority journeys built or fixed, testing program running, dashboards live. Journey performance improvements visible within the quarter.

How is success measured?

Journey conversion rates, revenue per journey, test velocity and win rate, and overall lifecycle-attributed revenue growth.

Head of Lifecycle vs Lifecycle Director?

The head builds and runs journeys daily; the director owns the lifecycle strategy. If journeys need building and operating, hire the head.

Beyond the send

Hire a head of lifecycle marketing who measures incremental revenue, not opens

When you hire a head of lifecycle marketing, the first thing I build is rarely a campaign. It is the event taxonomy and data model that everything downstream depends on. I map the handful of behaviours that actually predict activation, expansion and churn, then define them once as clean, versioned events flowing from your product and billing systems into the ESP through Segment or RudderStack. Most teams skip this and wire triggers off whatever events the developers happened to name, so journeys fire on 'button_clicked' instead of 'first value reached'. Get the model right and every flow, segment and report built on top of it stays honest. Get it wrong and you spend a year debugging why the numbers never reconcile.

The second foundation nobody interviews for is deliverability, and it is where I find the most buried revenue. Beautiful journeys are worthless if they land in spam. I audit authentication (SPF, DKIM and DMARC), warm dedicated IPs or subdomains properly, and watch Google Postmaster Tools and Validity for reputation drift. I build sunset policies so disengaged contacts are suppressed before they tank your inbox placement, and I separate marketing and transactional streams so a promotional blast can never jeopardise password resets. On one audit the fix was not a new flow at all; it was pruning a bloated send list that had quietly dropped the sender into the spam folder. Inbox placement, not opens, is the real top of this funnel.

On top of clean data and a healthy sender, I design the segmentation and lifecycle-stage model that decides who hears what and when. I prefer behavioural and RFM-based segments over static demographics, and I use predictive scores (native in Braze or Klaviyo, or modelled in the warehouse) to prioritise likely churners and high-intent buyers. The decisions that matter are frequency capping and suppression logic: how many messages a person can receive in a week, which channel takes priority, and when to go quiet. Over-messaging is the single most common mistake I inherit. 'Good' looks like a contactable, engaged base that trusts your sends, not a vanity list of a million addresses, half of which have stopped opening.

Finally, I make the function accountable to incremental revenue rather than attributed opens and clicks. I hold out a randomised control group from major journeys so we can prove what the programme actually caused, not what it took credit for. I model lifecycle revenue in the warehouse (Snowflake or BigQuery), with Hightouch or Census pushing audiences back to the ESP, and surface it in Looker or Metabase so finance and I read the same number. The mistake I fix most often is a CRM team reporting last-touch revenue that would have happened anyway. When you hire a head of lifecycle marketing who insists on holdouts, you stop paying for motion and start paying for lift.

Questions buyers ask

How quickly will I see results after I hire a head of lifecycle marketing?

Deliverability and data fixes often move numbers within two to four weeks, because they recover revenue you were already losing to the spam folder or broken triggers. Net-new journeys and the segmentation model take a quarter to show durable lift, and incrementality from holdouts needs a few send cycles to read cleanly. I prioritise the fast recoveries first, so that early engagement funds the slower structural work.

Will you manage my existing team, or just do the work yourself?

Both, depending on what you need. If you already have an email specialist and a data analyst, I run the function as their lead: setting priorities, reviewing builds, raising their technical level, and owning the roadmap. If you have nobody yet, I execute hands-on and hire the permanent team as volume grows. Fractional does not mean advisory only; I am in the platform building and shipping.

Do you only build inside the ESP, or in our data warehouse too?

Both, and the split matters. Real-time behavioural triggers belong in the ESP, but complex audiences, predictive scores and revenue reporting belong in the warehouse. I use Hightouch or Census to sync warehouse segments back into Braze, Iterable or Klaviyo, and model lifecycle revenue in Snowflake or BigQuery. If you have no warehouse yet, I can run entirely in-platform and add the data layer later, when it pays for itself.

How is lifecycle marketing different from CRM, retention or email marketing?

Email is a channel; CRM is often a database or a sales tool; retention is an outcome. Lifecycle is the discipline that connects them: owning the messaging a customer receives across channels at every stage, from onboarding to winback, aimed at moving them to the next stage. When you hire a head of lifecycle marketing, you are hiring the person accountable for that whole journey, not for one tool or one metric.

Can you run SMS, WhatsApp and push, and handle international consent rules?

Yes. I coordinate email, SMS, WhatsApp and push on one frequency and suppression plan, so channels do not collide. I also build consent and preference handling for GDPR in Europe, CAN-SPAM in the US, PECR in the UK and PDPL in the UAE, including double opt-in where required and region-specific suppression. Getting consent architecture right early saves painful list rebuilds and regulatory exposure later.

How do engagements work, and how long are you typically retained?

I work on a monthly retainer sized to the scope, usually a fixed number of days a week. Most lifecycle engagements run six to twelve months: the first quarter fixes the foundations and ships priority journeys, then I move into optimisation and either hand off to an in-house hire or stay on at reduced days. A short diagnostic audit is available if you want a scoped assessment before committing.
