There is no universal answer. An agency brings a team, process and cover for holidays. A senior freelance SaaS developer brings direct access, lower overhead and faster decisions. The right pick depends on the size and shape of your project.
I am a freelancer, so read this knowing that. I still turn down projects that need a full team and point those clients to agencies. I have taken SaaS products from MVP to scale as a fractional CTO.
How the two options compare
- Cost — freelancers carry no office, sales or account-management overhead, so the same senior skill usually costs less.
- Who does the work — with a freelancer, the person you meet builds it. Agencies may staff juniors after the sale.
- Speed of decisions — one person means answers the same day. Agencies route through a project manager.
- Capacity — agencies can put several people on a big build at once. A freelancer has limits.
- Freelancer fits — an MVP, billing, onboarding or a scaling fix.
- Agency fits — a full product team of design, QA and several engineers.
