Find a freelance web designer worth hiring
Where clients actually find good freelance web designers, the checks that separate senior from junior, and a direct option if you want to skip the search.
Where to find a freelance web designer
Searching for a freelance web designer usually means sifting through hundreds of profiles that all claim the same skills. The channel you search in shapes who you find, so pick it on purpose.
Below are the places clients use, with the trade-off of each. If you would rather talk to a senior web designer straight away, you can contact me directly and skip the shortlist.
Where good freelance web designers come from
- Referrals — the best source when someone you trust has hired a web designer recently. Ask what went wrong, not just what went right.
- Freelance marketplaces — Upwork and similar sites give volume and payment protection, but profiles are hard to compare. Filter on long-term client history.
- Vetted networks — curated platforms pre-screen talent and charge a premium for it.
- Portfolios and personal sites — a web designer with their own site and case studies is easier to judge and usually more established.
- Check live sites, not Dribbble shots — polished mockups do not show how the design works with real content.
- Red flags — no live work to show, a price quoted before any questions, or pressure to pay everything upfront.
What I take on as your web designer
- Page design — layouts built around what your visitor needs to decide.
- Design systems — type, colour and components that stay consistent as the site grows.
- Figma to live site — designs turned into real pages without losing detail.
- Conversion layout — clear calls to action, trust signals and short forms.
- Mobile first — every page designed for the phone before the desktop.
- Redesigns — a fresh look that keeps the rankings you already earned.
